The new school year is fast approaching. Here are my top 5 Things I Must Do to feel prepared!
Finalize our schedule: It takes me a long time to get to a place where I can finalize our schedules. My goal is to have this done at least one week prior to our 1st day of school. Once I have finalized it, I print one for each child to have and give it to them during our family orientation meeting.
Communicate to family & friends: Being a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom can sometimes give the impression that you are always free to chat – which is not the case. Social phone calls during my teaching time is super distracting – and sometimes put a halt to learning. So this year I am sending out an email to friends and family letting them know when I am free to chat. It is all about boundaries ya’ll!
Create our playlist: For highschool I attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts. It was a unique experience. One of the ‘different’ things that I loved was the fact there were no bells to transition classes. Instead, our in-house, student-led radio station, played music. I loved that! Oftentimes you would find me dancing to my next class. So this year, I invited my girls to come up with a playlist of songs that will transition us for one block of study to the next. They each will have a chance of being the DJ.
Stock my House with Supplies: This one is a must!!! Making sure we have what we need in the house is crucial for my sanity. When the fall starts, it is back to everything and I just run out of time and energy to do all the shopping, so having it in the house and ready to go is a must. When I say supplies, I am not just talking about school supplies (check out my 25 must-have school supply list), I am also talking about household supplies like kleenex, cold medicine, and snacks. Try to get your ‘must have’ items in the house before school starts.
Hang Out With Friends: Somewhere, while growing up with kids, my Saturdays have been taken away. Girlfriend time is a must – everyone is in their busy season and so it is hard to find the time. I have found that it becomes even harder during the first couple of months of school as folks are adjusting to their new normal. So I try to have some girlfriend right before school starts.
Now you know how I prepare for Back-to-School, what do you do to make sure your year gets off to a good start? I’m looking for ideas ya’ll – leave them in the comment section below. And as always, stay encouraged & be blessed ~ Chantel
